We are happy to announce a new feature is now available for Shared Hosting clients, designed to enhance your experience and ensure uninterrupted access to your account.

This tool allows you to self-unblock your IP whenever it appears to be blocked by our firewall.

Identify the Block:

If your IP is blocked, you will experience symptoms such as timeouts on your browser or email client, or failure to ping the server. These signs indicate that your IP might be blocked by our firewall. For example:

  • Browser: You might see messages like "Connection timed out," "This site can’t be reached," or "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT."
  • FTP Client: Common messages include "Connection timed out," "Failed to retrieve directory listing," or "Could not connect to server."
  • Email Client: You may encounter errors such as "Connection to server failed," "Login to server failed," or "IMAP server closed the connection."

Why might your IP get blocked?

Our firewall is equipped with security measures to protect your account and our infrastructure. Here are the most common reasons why your IP might be blocked:

  •  ModSecurity Rules: Our firewall employs ModSecurity rules to prevent various types of cyber attacks. Some common scenarios where your IP might be blocked include:
    • Editing a WordPress Page: Certain actions, such as editing or updating a WordPress page, might trigger ModSecurity rules designed to prevent SQL injection attacks or cross-site scripting (XSS).
    • Form Submissions: Submitting forms that appear to have unusual patterns or payloads can also trigger these security rules.
    • File Uploads: Attempting to upload files with extensions or content that ModSecurity deems potentially harmful.

      If you have identified this reason, you can disable ModSecurity while working on your pages - just don't forget to enable it afterwards. Alternatively, you can contact us and we will look in more details into the rules triggered and assist with avoiding further blocks.
  • Bruteforce Attempts: To protect your account from unauthorized access, our firewall blocks IPs that exhibit patterns of bruteforce attacks, such as repeated failed login attempts. This includes:
    • IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol): Your IP will be blocked after 5 failed attempts to access your email account. This often occurs if an email client is misconfigured with the wrong password. Many email clients are set to retry automatically, even if the previous attempts failed, leading to multiple failed attempts and eventually causing your IP to be blocked. If your password fails more than twice, it is best to go into cPanel >> Email Accounts and change the password to ensure it is correct. This proactive step can help prevent repeated blocks and ensure smooth access to your email.
    • FTP (File Transfer Protocol): Repeated unsuccessful attempts to log into your FTP server.
    • CPanel (Port 2083): Numerous failed login attempts to your cPanel.
    • SSH (Secure Shell): Failed authentication attempts when trying to access your server via SSH. Note that SSH access requires the private key to be added and authorized through the cPanel GUI before access is possible.
  • Other Suspicious Activities: Any other activities that our security system deems suspicious may also lead to an IP block to prevent potential security breaches.


How to use the self-unblock feature:

Access the Self-Unblock Portal: Login into your account at billing.flokinet.is where you look for the  IP Unblock Tool section. Click on Unlock IP and add the IP you would like to unlock. After clicking on Unblock IP you will have to add a reason for why you have been blocked.

For privacy reasons, we do not store the IP addresses you enter in this field. This information is used only temporarily and is not logged

Please note, this self-unblock feature does not mean that your IP is whitelisted. It is crucial to ensure that your passwords and usernames are correct to avoid being blocked again. Continual triggering of security rules or repeated failed login attempts may lead to further blocks.
