Migrating from Shared Hosting to a VPS

If you're thinking about moving from Shared Hosting to a VPS, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

Shared hosting accounts use cPanel to simplify tasks such as managing domains, databases and email accounts, as well as handling CMS platforms such as WordPress or Sitejet Builder.

Our team manages the server, performing updates and optimisations, so you can focus solely on your applications within the shared environment.

However, switching to a VPS gives you full control as the root user. This means that you will be responsible for configuring and managing the server yourself. To make this process easier, we recommend choosing a VPS with a cPanel/WHM license, which provides a familiar interface and simplifies migration. You can purchase the cPanel license Add-On when ordering your server. Alternatively, you can install an open-source control panel on your new virtual server to simplify the administration of hosting your application (we have an article on this option available here: Open Source Control Panel).

All our VPS plans come with a minimal Linux environment and root access, but not pre-configured web applications. This means that you will need to install and configure web servers (Apache or Nginx), databases and security settings yourself.

Please note that our VPS services are unmanaged, meaning we won't have access to the server once it's been deployed. You are fully responsible for its ongoing management, but of course we will try to help and provide guidance on troubleshooting various issues as they arise.

The migration process:

We recommend ordering your new VPS and starting to migrate your data while keeping your old shared hosting active, in order to reduce downtime.

Once you have set up and tested everything on your new VPS, we will cancel the old service and refund any unused portion of your billing cycle as account credit.

If you have any questions or require further information about this process, please open a support ticket.

We are always happy to help.
