Hosting your own Mastodon instance on a VPS or dedicated server allows you to have complete control over a decentralized social media platform that you can customize however you like.
Requirements:
- A fully qualified domain name (you can register one with us here -> FlokiNET Domain Registration)
- A VPS / Dedicated Server
- Runing Mastodon requires some resources, so we recommend a minimum configuration close to:
- 4GB RAM
- 4 vCPUs
- OS: Debian 12 or Ubuntu (22.04 +)
- An email provider (ProtonMail, Mailgun or other)
- Optional: an Object storage provider
Fortunately, Mastodon provides a detailed documentation on how to:
- Prepare your machine - it is very important to first secure your server
- Install from source - instructional guide on how to create your own Mastodon-powered website
Once you have successfully installed Mastodon, you can start inviting people to join your server and customize your social media experience.
